Kenneth Williams has always fascinated me.  It was the magic combination of his striking features and wild expressions, exaggerated elocution and flamboyant tone that first hooked me.  

Later too, learning about his life and struggles with sexuality and mental health further enhanced my adoration.  He  lived through the times when being gay was illegal and his comedy and acting bravely defied that in tactful and subversive ways.  

The BBC Radio 4 comedy act 'Julian and Sandy'  in the show Round the Horne, was a fine example of this. The two stereotypical gay characters peppered the script with the gay language Polari and allowed the gay audience to appreciate the show on another level.
