"Wop bop a loo bop a lop bom bom"

Richard  Wayne Penniman is Little Richard, the true and original "King of Rock and Roll" (December 5, 1932 – May 9, 2020).

He was the architect of the genre, setting the standard for all those who followed in his footsteps.  His energetic performances and unique styling were off the scale.

Little Richard's influence can clearly be seen in the likes of Prince, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles and the Rolling Stones.  White stars of the Rock and Roll era covered versions of many of his songs like "Tutti Fruitti" and "Long Tall Sally".

Though he struggled with his sexuality we cannot forget his queer credentials.  He was one of the first openly gay/bisexual performer to regularly wore women's makeup, wild pompadour style hair and flamboyant outfits.  Even by today's standards he was very effeminate but this didn't stop his appeal to both white and Black audiences.
